Petrol prices: how can we be convinced to drive less?
Petrol prices aren’t going to come down, no matter how many political promises and pledges.  Driving is going to become more and more expensive, as Ross Gittins points out http://business.smh.com.au/too-gutless-to-give-us-the-bad-oil-20080610-2ogn.html.

The trouble is, successive governments have focused almost solely on new roads, all these fabulous M2s and M5s and tunnels designed to make journeys quicker but in reality rarely doing so. Not to mention the greenhouse gas emissions.  And while roads have long been the great god, public transport has played poor cousin. The odd extra bus lane, timetables slowed down to make it appear trains are arriving on time and some outlines of bicycles randomly painted by the local council.

What’s the answer? Hybrid cars? Extra taxes on gas guzzlers? How can we be convinced to drive less?
